My man, JP Soul from San Francisco, has just posted this hot boogie edit of "A Thief in the Night", available as a free download on Soundcloud for a limited time and it is hot, Hot, HOT! JP is preparing to relaunch SF's legendary Roam Recordings with limited edition vinyl releases followed up with full scale digital distribution. Past Roam releases include tracks by Hesohi, Justin Martin & Sammy D, (co-owner) Chad Mitchell, Lance Desardi as well as JP himself and future releases look just as promising. If you are in the Bay Area this Saturday (10/22), catch him, along with Mike Bee, Jason Greer and Darren Davis, at Vinyl Dreams at 222 Hyde, doing their all vinyl thang on that lovely Turbosound system. Also, if things work out right, I'll be joining JP back in the Bay on November 12th for a gig at Showdown SF!

For those on Wall St. and every other street that are looking to make something different happen. This is dedicated to you, the 99%, and to the movement. Stay strong.
I wanted the variety of artists on the mix to reflect the diversity of the movement that inspired the tape while having each track speak to one aspect of the movement, whether on a deep, angry, comical or uplifting level, or more of a middle finger in the air, i'm fed up level. I would be honored and humbled if anyone occupying our streets or the streets of cities around the world takes inspiration from this mixtape to continue to carry on the struggle. track listing :. 01. intro (dialog taken from chris hedges interview on c.b.c.) 02. The drudgery of the work week is coming to an end and what better way to welcome the weekend than with a new edit! Here's to hoping your 5pm comes with the quickness and the boogie can begin. Pleasure was a funk and soul outfit from Portland, Oregon that had a cult following on the underground black music scene of the 70's. Their biggest hit was "Glide" but I always preferred the laid back disco groove of their track "Future Now" off the album of the same name. The electric guitar work of Marlon "The Magician" McClain gave their sound an edge not usually heard among their contemporaries but for this edit, I tried to stay true to the original vibe while removing more of the in your face guitar solos. I also tried to emphasizing the more soulful aspects of the track, extending out the slow disco grooves and beautiful backing vocals. The edit also benefits from a boost to the low end and a few subtle overdubs. "We are universal children" and this is how we get down! How about a little disco funk by the Ohio Players to get you over your mid-week hump? Here's one of their classic tunes, beefed up and reworked by Jimmy Michaels. The track is "Fire" and damn is it hot! Download this joint now while it's still available.
The design pimps, art curators and all around culture hustlers over at San Francisco's Hydrilla crew were cool enough to ask me to contribute to there ongoing dj series, Please Advise, and I was more than happy to oblige. The concept is simple; pick top djs in their genre and record them playing lives sets showcasing their sounds. In other words, advise the people to what it is. Past sets worth checking out include Jah Yzer & Irie Dole laying down their blend of dance hall and hi hop live from Showdown SF. My set was recorded live in Rio de Janeiro just before I left for the European tour. The mix is well eclectic, going from house and disco to a bit of funk and beyond, acknowledging the sample in the Romanowski track that's featured, "if you specialize in one thing, you can't really call yourself an all out king." Not that I would ever call myself an all out king, of course, but it's good to have aspirations ;) [stream and download here] The good folks over at Stones Throw have blessed us with a free download of the entire new album by Will Sessions. Check the hype below and then go get you some! Eight-piece soul-funk ensemble Will Sessions began making a name for themselves by playing gigs with fellow Detroit natives Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Phat Kat, backing them with live interpretations of Madlib, Dilla and Black Milk beats. Now the group has dropped a free live album, Real Sessions, a compilation of live recordings with these MCs. [ download here ] |
